Benfica beats Santa Clara and catches Sporting in second place in the I Liga (see the goals)

This Friday, February 13, Benfica beat Santa Clara, in the Azores, 2-1, in a game in the 22nd round of the I League. This result allows José Mourinho’s team to equal Sporting in second place, although the lions will only host Famalicão on Sunday.

The Reds opened the scoring in the 16th minute with Pavlidis, who headed in Tomás Araújo’s cross. The striker scored his 20th successful shot in the championship and once again isolated himself on the competition’s top scorers list, with one more goal than Sporting player Luis Suárez.

José Mourinho’s team completely dominated the game, as a result of which they increased their lead in the 38th minute, when, after an excellent play, Pavlidis assisted Prestianni to deflect the ball into the goal, but it was defender Paulo Victor who was the last to touch the ball, thus scoring an own goal.

Benfica seemed to have victory in its pocket, as the Azoreans were little bother. But at the beginning of the second half, a huge mistake by goalkeeper Trubin allowed Gonçalo Paciência’s harmless header to result in a goal.

The match was restarted, but the Azoreans showed no arguments to bother Benfica and even saw Lucas Soares sent off in the final moments. The team coached by Petit occupies the second-to-last place with just three points more than Tondela, who have one game in hand and are the first team in the relegation zone.
