A 50-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday, February 11, in France for freezing the bodies of two children when they were newborns.
The bodies were discovered in the northeast of the country, the day before the mother, suspected of the murders, was arrested on the outskirts of Paris.
The woman admitted to having committed the crimes after giving birth to the babies, in 2011 and 2018, respectively.
The arrest was the result of a complaint made this Tuesday, allegedly by one of the suspect’s children, who discovered the first lifeless body in a freezer in the laundry area of the house, located in the commune of Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont. Authorities ended up finding the second body, wrapped in a bag, inside the same appliance, which was only used by the woman.
The suspect was arrested in Boulogne-Billancort, 300 kilometers away from where the bodies were discovered.
Mother of nine children, from three relationships, allegedly “hid the pregnancies from people close to her” and gave birth alone in the house she “suddenly” abandoned in December, leaving her four youngest children, aged between 14 and 20, and their father, as well as an older son from another relationship, according to the AFP.
The woman’s partner was also detained, but has not yet been the subject of any formal complaint. According to the Public Ministry, the man declared himself “completely shocked”, saying that he was “completely unaware of the pregnancies”.
The prosecutor detailed that autopsies will be carried out on Friday to determine the “exact circumstances” of the babies’ deaths and date the crimes.
The mayor of Aillevillers, Jean-Claude Tramesel, said that residents of the small village, with around 1,500 inhabitants, are “astonished”, stressing that the couple, who have lived in the area for two decades, “never attracted attention”.
