Tension grows in Greenland: Sweden will send fighter planes to fly over

Sweden this Thursday announced that it will send fighter jets to fly over Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, as part of NATO’s new mission in the Arctic intended for appease US President Donald Trump.

The Republican president even threatened to use force to take over Greenland and launched the controversial idea of ​​applying trade tariffs to countries that oppose his planes over the Arctic island.

Trump’s threats have caused one of the most serious crises in the history of the Atlantic Alliance, created in 1949, until the American president announced that he had concluded a “framework” for an agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

 

NATO will reinforce the Arctic

This Wednesday, NATO announced the launch of a new mission to reinforce its presence in the Arctic, called Arctic Sentry.

Gripen fighter jets will monitor Greenland, as part of this mission because “Sweden has the responsibility to contribute to the security of the entire territory of the Alliance,” declared Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, quoted in a statement.

“The Arctic region is of growing strategic importance,” he added.

Finally, in another statement, the Swedish armed forces indicated that the fighter planes will be based in Iceland.
