Repsol fined 20.5 million for abuse of dominant position in Spain

A Repsol allegedly abused its dominant position when the price of gasoline for resellers rose in 2022. Now, it was fined 20.5 million euros.

A decision was taken by CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) and made public this Tuesday, the 3rd.

The regulator condemned the oil company for illegal practices that took place between April and December 2022. At issue, he reveals, was the option to reduce the margins of service stations competing with Repsol in the sale of simple diesel to professionals, namely transport companies.

According to the conviction, what was at stake, on the one hand, was a general increase in wholesale prices for independent stations and, at the same time, a discount campaign at Repsol stations. Added to the volatility that characterized the market in that period, marked by the first months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, competitors recorded a significant drop in sales, with Repsol gaining market share.

The fine falls on Repsol Comercial de Productos Petrolíferos (now Repsol Soluciones Energéticas), Solred and Campsa Estaciones de Servicio (both subsidiaries of the Repsol Group). These are still prevented from participating in public tenders for common diesel oil.
