Passengers at national airports rise 4.7% and reach 73.75 million in 2025

The number of passengers handled at national airports is expected to have increased by 4.7% in 2025, to 73.75 million. The data were released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) this Thursday, February 12th and are provisional. The growth recorded last year was higher than the annual increase of 4.3% seen in 2024.

Last year, they landed at national airports 255,704 aircraft on commercial flights, which represents an increase of 4.0% (compared to an increase of 0.9% in 2024). The movement of cargo and mail fell 0.5% compared to the previous year, against an increase of 14.2%, to 253,611 tons.

O Lisbon airport handled 49.0% of total passengers (36.1 million), an increase of 2.9% compared to 2024while Porto picked up 23.0% of passengers (6.3% more) and Faro picked up 10.4 million (share 14.1% and increase of 5.8%).

In 2025, the five main countries of origin and destination remained compared to the previous year, highlighting the United Kingdom (2.4% increase in disembarked passengers and 2.2% increase in boarded passengers). Despite a 2.3% reduction in disembarked passengers and a 1.9% reduction in embarked passengers, France remained in second position. Spain, Germany and Italy maintained third, fourth and fifth position, respectively.

Lisbon airport concentrated 77.4% of the total cargo and mail handled in 2025, with 196,405 tons – 1.0% less compared to 2024 –, while the others increased by 1.2%, to 57,203 tons. In an analysis of just the month of December, it was found that national airports handled 4.9 million passengers and 20.2 thousand tons of cargo and mail, corresponding to a 4.6% increase in passenger volume and an 8.8% decrease in cargo moved, when compared to the same month in 2024.

“Throughout the year 2025 there were historic monthly highs in the number of passengers handled at national airports, with the exception of February”highlighted the IBGE, pointing out that, in the last month of the year, there was an average daily disembarkation of around 82.1 thousand passengers, 5.2% more than in December 2024 (78 thousand).
