Oriana Depression does not directly affect the continent but brings rain and winds of 80 kilometers per hour

The Oriana depression will not affect mainland Portugal directly, but will cause, from Thursday to Friday, periods of rain, sometimes heavy, and wind with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour, in almost the entire country, indicated the IPMA.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), between late Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, mainland Portugal will be crossed by “a frontal system associated with a depression region centered on the north of the Iberian Peninsula”, which “in its movement towards Spain (…) will give rise to the Oriana depression”.

“This depression will not affect mainland Portugal directly since its development will already be carried out in Spanish territory”, he highlighted.

However, this frontal system will result in periods of rain, sometimes heavy, and winds with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour in mainland Portugal, the statement said.

Due to this forecast, IPMA placed Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga under yellow rain warning during this period.

These districts, along with Bragança, Faro and Beja, will also be under a yellow wind warning.

Depression Nils caused rain and sometimes strong wind today, despite not directly affecting mainland Portugal, according to the IPMA, in a warning that ends at 11:59 pm today.

Sixteen people died in Portugal following the passage of depressions Kristin, Leonardo and Marta, which also caused many hundreds of injuries and displacement.
