Real Madrid and UEFA reach agreement on European Super League

Real Madrid announced this Wednesday that it had achieved an “agreement in principle” with UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC), with a view to resolving disputes related to the European Super League projectthus putting an end to a process that had been dragging on since 2021.

In a statement released through official channels, the Spanish club states that the understanding was reached “after months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football” and which aims to promote the “well-being of European football at club level”, highlighting respect for the principle of sporting merit, long-term financial sustainability and improving the fan experience through technology.

According to the note, the agreement in principle will also allow the resolution of legal disputes associated with the European Super League, as long as the principles now established are formally executed and implemented. Real Madrid does not, however, detail the concrete terms of the understanding reached.

The announcement comes a few days after Barcelona announced its formal withdrawal from the project, leaving the Madrid club as the last of the initial promoters still linked to the initiative.

The European Super League was presented on April 18, 2021 by 12 clubs fundadores: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, AC Milan, Internazionale, Juventus, Atlético de Madrid, Barcelona e Real Madrid. The proposal envisaged a practically closed competition, played in parallel with the national and European competitions organized by UEFA.
