Unemployment in France reaches 7.9% in December 2025, highest level since 2021

The unemployment rate in France reached 7.9% in December 2025, 0.6 points more than in the previous year and 0.2 points more than at the end of the third quarter, it was announced this Tuesday, 10.

The French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) announced this Tuesday, the 10th, that the number of unemployed people (people who are looking for a job and are available to immediately join a job) reached the highest level since the third quarter of 2021.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, the increase in unemployment was 0.2 points (to 7.9%) compared to the previous three months, resulting in a total of 2.5 million unemployed people.

The increase in unemployment was especially significant among young people aged 15 to 24, with an increase of 2.4 points in the fourth quarter.

It is an increase of 2.8 points over the year as a whole for an unemployment rate of 21.5% among young people.

On the other hand, the female unemployment rate remained practically stable during the quarter (-0.1 points), standing at 7.6%, while the male unemployment rate increased 0.4 points, to 8.1%.
