Trump threatens to block opening of bridge between US and Canada

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the U.S. is fully compensated for everything we have given them and, importantly, until Canada treats the U.S. with the fairness and respect we deserve,” he said. It was unclear how Trump intended to delay or prevent the inauguration.

“We will begin negotiations IMMEDIATELY. With everything we gave them, we should own, perhaps, at least half of this asset”, Trump further lamented, adding that the revenue generated by the project “will be astronomical”.

Named after Canadian ice hockey legend Gordie Howe, the bridge is funded by the Canadian government but is publicly owned by the Canadian and Michigan executives, as set out in a 2012 Crossing Agreement. The agreement states that all iron and steel used in the project must be produced in the US or Canada.

This threat from Trump is the latest in a series of attacks against Canada and its Prime Minister, Mark Carney. The American president, who has repeatedly threatened to make his northern neighbor the 51st US state, threatened in January to withdraw certification and impose tariffs on Canadian-made aircraft. In Davos, he exchanged barbs with Carney, and then revoked the invitation for Canada to join the Peace Council, an entity that Trump said would resolve global conflicts.
