Donald Trump reactivated his accusations against Canada this Monday by denouncing a “unfair treatment” extended towards the United States and warn that will prevent the opening of the new bridge between Ontario and Michigan until receiving “full compensation”. His statement revives historical tensions in commercial matters and places the binational work at the center of a broader dispute.
The Republican president maintains that Canada “owns both the Canadian and the American side” of the project, alluding to the bilateral agreement that authorizes Ottawa to finance and manage construction until the investment is recovered. According to Trump, this structure was built “with virtually no American content” due to an exemption granted by Barack Obama to the Ley Buy Americanregulations that require the use of steel and materials manufactured in the USA in projects financed with federal resources.

“What does the United States get? Absolutely NOTHING!” wrote Trump, who accuses Canada of limiting the entry of American dairy products for years through a system of price controls and quotas. He added that some provinces restrict the sale of imported alcoholic beverages, although these regulations vary and do not constitute an absolute veto.
The president also attacked the negotiations that, he claims, Ottawa is maintaining with China, asserting that this approach “will end Canada”. In an openly exaggerated expression, he stated that Beijing will “end all ice hockey competitions” and even “eliminate the Stanley Cup,” using sports symbolism to underline his message.
Trump demanded to start talks “immediately” and maintained that the United States should “own at least half” of the bridge, a position without legal basis but consistent with its pressure strategy in trade and infrastructure disputes.
