Sócrates’ new legal representative will ask for five months to prepare the former ruler’s defense, according to the newspaper, noting that Sara Leitão Moreira is expected to hear this Tuesday (10) the court’s decision regarding the deadline granted.
The information about the new lawyer is contained in a request from Sócrates, who chose Sara Leitão Moreira to succeed José Preto, who resigned from defending the former prime minister, a decision taken due to the decision of judge Susana Seca who chose not to suspend the trial so that he could recover from pneumonia.
José Preto asked for five and a half months to prepare for Sócrates’ defense in the Marquês case, but was granted a period of ten days.
The new lawyer, says Expresso, “like her colleague”, will ask for a period of five months to consult the process. According to Sócrates’ request, Sara Leitão Moreira expects “a different response from the court”.
For the former government official, who cites the European Convention on Human Rights, the new lawyer’s request for time “is legitimate and justified given the size of the process”.
This is the fourth lawyer chosen by José Sócrates, after the death of João Araújo and the resignations of Pedro Delille and José Preto, after which an unofficial lawyer was appointed.
