The National Elections Commission (CNE) called this Saturday, February 7, for participation in Sunday’s presidential elections, despite forecasts of bad weather, and asked that the “best conditions” be provided for citizens to exercise their right to vote.
The CNE, according to a statement, “has cooperated with all entities” so that “the best conditions are created to guarantee the exercise of a right that is fundamental”, despite “adverse circumstances in some places”.
Therefore, the commission recommends organizing “special public transport, as far as possible, for voters who are in areas where mobility could be affected”, following the rules for organizing elections.
Until around 5pm, voting was postponed in 16 parishes and three polling stations, according to the CNE, which does not identify them.
Due to bad weather, at least three municipalities – Golegã, Arruda dos Vinhos and Alcácer do Sal – announced the postponement of Sunday’s elections until February 15.
The total number of polling stations with postponed voting corresponds to 31,862 registered voters, some of whom have already voted in advance, the statement also reads.
More than 11 million voters are called on Sunday to vote in the second round of the presidential elections to elect Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s successor, in elections held with forecasts of bad weather, rain and wind.
António José Seguro and André Ventura are competing in the second round, three weeks after the first vote in which they were the two most voted, on January 18th.
