This is the first episode of controlled discharges at the Alqueva Dam since 2013, the year in which a similar situation was recorded.
Since the infrastructure came into operation, this type of operation has only occurred occasionally, always associated with periods of intense and prolonged precipitation.
EDIA emphasizes that this is a planned and preventive operation, carried out in conjunction with the civil protection authorities, and is not related to any structural failure.
Even so, the discharges cause a temporary rise in the level of the Guadiana River downstream of the dam, an expected effect that is being monitored along the course of the river, particularly in areas such as Mértola e Alcoutim.
