Vladimir Alekseyev, key figure in military intelligence, is hospitalized

A ‘high-ranking’ soldier of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was shot this Friday, February 6, several times in a residential building in the northwest of Moscow and was transported to a hospital, Russian authorities announced.

“An unidentified person fired several shots” at General Vladimir Alekseyev, an employee of Russia’s military intelligence service, and “the victim was hospitalized,” the statement read.

Alekseyev, 64, stood out during ‘secret’ operations in Syria, where Russia intervened militarily in 2015 against jihadists and in support of the regime of deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The targeted soldier is the ‘right-hand man’ of General Igor Kostyukov, head of Russian military intelligence (GRU), who led the Russian delegation in the recent negotiations between Moscow and Kiev in Abu Dhabi, held with the presence of American mediators, to resolve the conflict with Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory, on February 24, 2022, several Russian generals, local authorities and public figures who supported the conflict have been killed in explosions on Russian territory or in occupied Ukraine, with some of these events being claimed by Kiev.
