Five percent of Portuguese people living in Luxembourg and Switzerland, with Portuguese Social Security pensions, have not yet taken the life test and have their pensions suspended, a percentage that is decreasing, according to official data.
Proof of life is essential for these pensioners to continue receiving their pensions, due to legislation that came into force on July 31st of last year.
Despite having to be done by November 30th, the National Pensions Center of Portugal accepted proofs of life made after that date, but they had to be done before the January pensions were processed (until December 15th, 2025) to avoid any interruption in payment.
In January, 294 pensions for Portuguese people in Luxembourg and 384 Portuguese people in Switzerland were suspended due to the lack of this proof, according to a source from the office of the Portuguese Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.
The same source has now indicated that, as of February 2, a further 366 life tests had been carried out: 170 for pensioners residing in Switzerland and 143 for pensioners residing in Luxembourg.
This means that, of the total number of eligible pensioners, 95% took the life test, an increase of five percentage points compared to the previous month.
As soon as pensioners provide proof of life, payment of their pensions is resumed and installments for the months of suspension are paid retroactively, guaranteed the same official source.
