António José Seguro highlighted the acceleration of poverty reduction in Portugal, the guarantee of health for all and housing as a fundamental right as his priorities if he is elected President of the Republic this Sunday, as indicated by all the polls relating to the second round he is contesting with André Ventura.
At the rally that ended his electoral campaign, on Friday night, in Leça do Balio (Matosinhos), the former secretary general of the PS said that “he will be a President of the Republic loyal at all times to the constitutional principles and values” which he considers to be “the common ground” of the Portuguese.
“We want to continue fighting for democracy and freedom”, said António José Seguro, opposing “some who want to go back”, the desire to “build a country that creates wealth, but leaves no one behind”.
Among the objectives he listed, in his campaign closing speech, Seguro highlighted “a more accelerated reduction in poverty than in recent years”preventing it from taking a century for it to cease to exist. But also the guarantee that, while it is unacceptable to take weeks, months or years to schedule appointments and surgeries, there is “health for all Portuguese, regardless of where they live and the money they have in their pockets”.
Equally highlighted, among three of the “many reasons” for his candidacy, was the defense that “housing is not a luxury or a privilege, but a fundamental right”. Something that he highlighted is far from happening when house prices and rents “are exorbitant”.
“Either politics serves to solve the problems of the Portuguese, or it serves absolutely nothing”, said the presidential candidate, adding to “politics with a big P” the need to “ensure young people have opportunities in their country”, stopping resorting to emigration when they do not find the jobs and income “they dreamed of having”.
