WASHINGTON (EFE).— US President Donald TrumpHe said yesterday that he has learned that a “slightly softer” approach could be used in immigration operations, after the death of two American citizens in the midst of protests over the raids in Minneapolis (Minnesota) last month.
“I learned that maybe we can use a little softer approach,” the president said in an interview with NBC News that aired Wednesday. “But you still have to be firm,” he added.
Nevertheless, Trump defended in the interview with journalist Tom Llamas, show host NBC Nightly News, its immigration policy by ensuring that it is about fighting “very dangerous criminals.”
The White House faced a flurry of criticism, including from Republicans, after the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good y Alex Pretti, two 37-year-old American citizens, by federal agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) and the Border Patrol.
Pretti’s death on January 24 further fueled criticism against the use of excessive force by immigration agents.
Trump confirmed in the interview in Oficina Oval that the initiative to withdraw 700 was his immigration agents from Minnesota and the city of Minneapolis, announced yesterday by its border tsar, Tom Homan, after reaching cooperation agreements with local authorities.
“We have achieved it. We are waiting for them to hand over to us the murderers they have detained and all the criminals, drug traffickers, all the bad people that we allow to enter our country,” he warned.
The president announced the capture of at least 4,000 migrants for various crimes during operations from the end of 2025 until yesterday,
Victims “were not angels”
Although Trump regretted in the interview the fatal shootings of Pretti and Renée in Minneapolismaintained that the victims “were not angels”, pointing out that both cases had “background and contexts” that, according to him, complicate the assessment of what happened.
Even so, the Republican stated that The results were tragic and not justifiable under any circumstances.
Trump added that the federal agents involved in the operations deeply regret the incidents and that the Administration will review its action protocols to prevent new similar episodes.
