Portugal has already defined its standard bearers for the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games Milan Cortina 2026scheduled for next Friday, February 6th. Vanina Guerillot and José Cabeça will be the athletes responsible for carrying the national flag in one of the most symbolic moments of the start of the Olympic competition.
Skier Vanina Guerillot once again assumes this distinction for the second time in a row, after leading the Portuguese delegation at the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Games, in 2022, in what was her Olympic debut. Due to the organization of the modalities in different geographical areas, the Opening Ceremony will take place in a decentralized manner, with the Portuguese athlete carrying the national flag from Cortina d’Ampezzo.
In Predazzo will be José Cabeça, who is making his second Olympic appearance, but who now assumes, for the first time, the responsibility of representing Portugal as a standard bearer. Visibly moved, the athlete confessed that he received the news “with a lot of emotion”, admitting that “a tear came to the corner of my eye”. For José Cabeça, being at the Olympic Games is already the realization of a dream, which takes on an even greater dimension with the honor of carrying the Portuguese flag, a symbol that he considers “very important for all Olympic athletes”.
Vanina Guerillot, in turn, highlights her renewed pride in playing this role again. For the athlete, it is not only a special sporting moment, but also a tribute to her roots and to the Portuguese community living abroad, which closely follows the journey of national athletes.
