Floods and Prevention Measures

In Abrantes, the Alvega canoeing station “is partially flooded” and the population residing in Rossio south of the Tagus, evacuated by the city council. In Constância, two streets are also “partially flooded”, as is “a car park”. In Torres Novas, “there are three restricted roads”, while in Vila Nova da Barquinha “the parking lot and the Almourol pier are completely submerged and the riverside park has been closed”. In Sardoal, the Lapa leisure area (left bank) is flooded and in the municipality of Entroncamento there is a section of road submerged.

The rain does not stop and with the discharges from the dams, the flow of the Tagus basin continues to fill, putting riverside areas at risk and imposing preventive measures. Civil Protection has already activated the red alert for the population of the various municipalities and DN knows that the Médio Tejo Local Health Unit, which includes the hospitals of Abrantes, Torres Novas and Tomar, has also activated level 1 of the disaster prevention plan, alerting all professionals to be on alert via SMS.

According to the DN, ULSMT is one of the few units of the National Health Service (SNS) that has training and a disaster plan with the WHO seal, having already responded in several crisis situations, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Civil Protection recommended that the population remove agricultural and industrial equipment, vehicles and other assets from adjacent areas, as well as safeguard animals in safe places, removing herds that are in floodable areas.

On Thursday afternoon, the Santarém City Council also ordered the mandatory evacuation of riverside areas and the closure of all schools in the municipality to prevent floods that are expected until the end of the afternoon and overnight. According to Lusa news, there are also around 50 roadways in this district due to bad weather and the increase in flows of the Tagus and its tributaries.

The Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command alerted the population to the closure of sections on dozens of roads, including national, regional and municipal, in several municipalities in the Santarém district, namely in the municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, where there are four submerged roads and another four in the same situation in the municipality of Cartaxo. The municipality of Santarém is the most affected, with nine roads affected and the village of Reguengo do Alviela remains isolated.

In the municipality of Golegã, there are eight roads with sections interrupted and several agricultural fields flooded, while in Chamusca four roads are submerged or closed. In Alpiarça there are six restricted roads and the Carril park is flooded. In the municipality of Almeirim there are eight conditioned roads.
