“It is a brief and incisive reflection on America’s tragic relationship with the Middle East.” This is how director António Simões describes the play in the room sheet. The American Pilota text by Scottish playwright David Greig, which premieres this Wednesday, February 4th, at Teatro Variedades, in Lisbon where it will remain until March 1st.
The plot begins when an American military plane crashes in a valley in a distant country and the injured pilot is welcomed by the local inhabitants. who don’t know what to do with it. Through this narrative, David Greig portrays how the world sees the United States and problematizes global geopolitical issues that dominate today.
The play, however, premiered in London in 2005 by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the first time it has been performed in Portugal.
