The Government of Spain wants prohibit access to social networks for those under 16 years of age to spare them a world of “pornography” and “violence”, the President of the Executive, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, announced this Tuesday in Dubai.

“Spain will prohibit access to social networks for those under 16 years of age,” Sánchez said in a speech at the World Government Summit taking place in the city of the United Arab Emirates.

“Platforms must implement effective systems of age verificationnot just checkboxes, but real barriers that work,” added the Spanish leader.
“Today, our children are exposed to a space they were never intended to navigate alone,” a space of “addiction, abuse, pornography, manipulation, violence”, he listed.
“We will no longer accept it,” Sánchez said. The left-wing leader also announced that the laws will change so that “platform executives are legally responsible for many infractions that occur on their websites.”
“This means that the CEOs of these technology platforms will face criminal liability for do not remove illegal content or that incite hatred,” he said.

In his speech this Tuesday, the idea was part of a package of five concrete measures that will be approved “starting next week.”
The president of the Spanish Government does not have a parliamentary majority and in recent times it has had problems gathering the necessary support to pass laws.
Australia opened the way to banning social media for children under 16 in December, and other countries have expressed interest in replicating the measure and are taking steps towards it, such as France, Portugal and now Spain.
