WASHINGTON.- Donald Trumppresident of USAdescribed as a “legendary victory” the American invasion of Mexico in 1847 in a publication to commemorate 178 years since the end of the conflict.
In a message spread by the official White House accountsTrump celebrated the war between Mexico and the United States; an unprecedented fact since the US government does not usually commemorate the date.
Trump also mentioned his country’s actions against drug trafficking and migration, directly mentioning Mexico as a main factor in both issues.
“My administration is stopping the flow of deadly drugs entering our country through Mexico, ending the invasion of illegal immigrants at our southern border, and dismantling narcoterrorist networks throughout the Western Hemisphere.”.
Given his statements, questions arose again about a possible US intervention in the fight against the cartels in Mexicosince the same Trump has assured that ground attacks within the country are a possibility.
In his recent message he wrote:
“We are aggressively advancing an America First peace policy through force and will continue to reaffirm the Trump corollary of the Monroe Doctrine to ensure that the Hemisphere remains secure, prosperous and free. We will never hesitate to put our people, our interests and our country first”.
Trump celebrates US invasion of Mexico in 1847
For the first time in recent decades, the White House commemorated the US invasion of Mexico which led to the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgothrough which several territories were ceded to the northern country.
“Today marks the 178th anniversary of our nation’s triumph in the Mexican-American War, a legendary victory that secured the American Southwest and reaffirmed American sovereignty.”Trump wrote.
The president stressed that said war allowed the annexation of California y New Mexicoalso highlighted how “heroic” the capture of Mexico City in September 1847, which gave way to the treaty in which Mexico lost 55% of its territory.
Trump justified these actions by referring “the promise of Manifest Destiny”a 19th century belief with which the United States maintained that it had a “divine” mission to expand territorially.
“Guided by the firm belief that our Nation was destined by divine providence to expand to the golden shores of the Pacific Ocean, in the wake of the bloody War of 1812, the United States confidently marched westward and boldly emerged as a continental superpower the likes of which the modern world had never seen before.”
Likewise, he used the last war to justify several of his current policies:
“Since assuming office as the 47th president of the United States, guided by our victory on the fields of Mexico 178 years ago, I have spared no effort in defending our southern border against invasion, upholding the rule of law, and protecting our homeland from forces of evil, violence, and destruction.”
