Netanyahu excludes Palestinian Authority from managing Gaza

In the case of the Gaza Strip, the truce was reached on October 10 under a plan proposed by the United States and included the exchange of hostages (20 alive and 28 dead and all already repatriated) for Palestinian prisoners, the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces and the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory.

The next steps envisage a technocratic Palestinian transitional government, already constituted, the disarmament of Hamas, the creation of an international military force and the reconstruction of the enclave.

At the White House level, the role of the Palestinian Authority, which governed the territory until Hamas took control in 2007, remained unclear.

The day-to-day management of the territory will be entrusted, on a transitional basis, to 15 members of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (CNAG), under the authority of the Peace Council, in turn led by the US President, until the Palestinian Authority implements a reform program.

Witkoff landed this Tuesday at Tel Aviv airport, from where he went to the meeting with Netanyahu, in which the commander of the Israeli armed forces, Eyal Zamir, and the director of the Israeli secret services (Mossad), David Barnea, also participated.

The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by attacks led by Hamas on October 7, 2023 in southern Israel, in which around 1,200 people died and 251 were taken hostage.

In retaliation, Israel launched a large-scale military operation in the Palestinian enclave, which caused more than 71,000 deaths, according to local authorities, a humanitarian disaster, the destruction of almost all of the territory’s infrastructure and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
