Increase of 6.20% in CTT Prices Impacts the Press and Generates Concern

CTT prices rise from this Tuesday, 3rd, by an average of 6.20% and the Portuguese Press Association defends the intervention of the Government and the National Communications Authority (Anacom) due to the economic impact on the sector.

The updated prices for CTT’s postal services come into force today, covering both the Universal Postal Service and other postal services, including complementary and advertising mail services.

For example, the national standard mail service weighing up to 20 grams will increase by four cents, within the scope of the universal postal service.

The Portuguese Press Association considers that the CTT tariff update “again penalizes the paper press, with increases higher than inflation, contradicting public commitments to defend the printed newspaper”.

According to the information transmitted by CTT, “this update arises from the Price Agreement for the three-year period 2026-2028, signed between the National Communications Authority (Anacom), the Directorate-General for Consumers and CTT, and is based on the need to mitigate the effects of inflation and the continued drop in postal traffic”, says the association.

“With regard to Editorial Mail, CTT indicates increases of 5.5% for national newspapers and periodical publications and 5.7% for international shipments, values that, despite being lower than the global average for the basket, represent a significant increase in the distribution costs of paper press”, said the Portuguese Press Association, last week.

For the association, “this tariff update is particularly worrying in the current context of the sector”.

In fact, “in recent years, postal prices charged by CTT have registered successive increases that, consistently, exceed the inflation rate recorded in Portugal in the same period, structurally aggravating the costs of media companies”.

“Without prejudice to the recognition of the importance of the Pack Editorial promotional program and the support granted under the Editorial Agreement”, the association “understands that these measures do not compensate for the accumulated impact of successive postal price updates”.

In view of this, the Portuguese Press Association will present this situation to the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, as well as to Anacom, “defending the need for a regulatory and political approach that ensures effective conditions for the survival and continuity of the paper press in Portugal”.
