The presidential candidate and leader of Chega, André Ventura, demanded this Monday, February 2, that the Prime Minister recant after having “implied” that the deaths due to bad weather were the responsibility of these people.
“In an intervention by the Prime Minister, he is basically understanding that the responsibility of the people who died is their own. And, therefore, that people were unable to avoid this consequence, implying that it was because of their behavior that they ended up dying”, he stated.
The candidate for President of the Republic spoke to journalists before a visit to the company Madeiras Alto Tâmega, in Chaves, in the district of Vila Real, as part of the campaign for the second round of the presidential elections, scheduled for Sunday.
André Ventura highlighted that this “was not” the situation and that people “were not expecting” the bad weather that has been affecting the country in recent days. “At most, it was due to the State’s inaction that they ended up dying”, he argued.
André Ventura said he hoped these statements were “an oversight”. “I think the Prime Minister will have, and I hope he will have, the opportunity to retract his words”, he challenged.
On Sunday, in a press conference following an extraordinary Council of Ministers that approved support measures for populations affected by the bad weather, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, conveyed his condolences to “the families of those who did not avoid the tragic consequence of losing their lives due to these adverse episodes.”
