The Municipalities of Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho warned this Sunday of the “high risk” of flooding, particularly in riverside areas, during the next morning, taking into account precipitation forecasts.
“If you live in a risky riverside area, be prepared and know your Population Concentration and Support Zone (ZCAP). If necessary, remember: prepare an emergency bag with documents, medicines and essential items; always follow the instructions of the authorities; and remain attentive to official warnings”, warned the Coimbra City Council on social media.
The executive of Montemor-o-Velho, in the district of Coimbra, also warned on social media of “maximum caution on the part of everyone” and that “it is important to adopt self-protection and prevention measures”.
“Avoid driving near riverside areas historically vulnerable to rapid flooding. Do not cross flooded areas, preventing people or vehicles from being dragged into holes in the pavement or open sewage tanks”, he appealed.
The alerts follow forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) which “indicate periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy, from this morning onwards, with the district of Coimbra under yellow warning from 00:00 on February 2nd”.
“The wind will also be felt with intensity tonight (with an orange and yellow warning for our district). These Rain forecasts will continue throughout the week, which worsens the high risk of flooding in historically more vulnerable areass, as is the case of Vale do Mondego and the banks of the river”, he informed.
In this sense, he reinforced calls for safety with warnings of “defensive driving with increased caution, reducing speed and taking special care with the formation of water tables on the roads, especially at night”.
“Respect all signage and instructions from authorities; immediately report any dangerous situation to local authorities; at home, keep water drainage systems unobstructed, avoid leaving loose parts on balconies and terraces and adopt a proactive and defensive attitude; and if you live in areas historically vulnerable to floods, safeguard vehicles, goods, animals and agricultural implements, removing them from lower areas”, he wrote.
The Parish Council of Pereira, in the Municipality of Montemor-o-Velho, also warned the population of “the probability of flooding in the historic area, lower in the town of Pereira, from Sunday night to Monday”.
“Take advantage of the next few hours, the assets must be taken care of to avoid further damage and the members of the council are available to assist with whatever is necessary”, indicated the Pereira Parish Council.
