Shakur Stevenson looks to build upon his recent dominance at lightweight, as he climbs up a division to challenge lineal junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 31.
Touted as one of the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighters, Stevenson has faced much criticism in recent years for the caliber of his competition in the ring, but there’s no denying the rigid test in front of him facing Lopez.
Lopez is a former unified champion at lightweight and has gone 6-0 since making the move to 140 pounds, claiming the WBO and Ring Magazine titles against Josh Taylor in 2023 and defending those belts three times since.
But despite Lopez boasting the most credentialed resume of any Stevenson opponent, the Newark native has promised a one-sided display on fight night.
“I just can’t wait to beat him and shut him up. Teo is not on this level,” Stevenson said in a December press conference. “Teo is a high-level fighter, but he’s not on my level. I’m an elite-level fighter, and come January 31st, I’m going to show it.”
