WASHINGTON.- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatens to impose tariffs on countries that sell oil to Cubato a measure that would represent a new pressure on Mexicowhich argues humanitarian reasons for that sale.
This Thursday Trump signed a executive order which establishes that his government may impose tariffs on goods from nations that sell or provide oil to Cuba.
Why would Trump apply the new tariffs?
“I consider that the situation with respect to Cuba constitutes a unusual and extraordinary threat to national security and the foreign policy of the United States and I hereby declare a national emergency with respect to that threat,” he argued.
“It is necessary to establish a tariff system, under which a tariff may be imposed additional tax on imports of products from foreign countries that, directly or indirectly, sell or supply crude oil to Cuba,” he specifies.
In the order, Trump assures that the Cuban government has taken measures that harm and threaten the United States and aligns itself with “transnational terrorist groups and adverse actors” such as Russia, China, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah.
Likewise, he emphasizes that Cuba persecutes and tortures its political opponentsdenies the Cuban people freedom of expression and of the press, corruptly takes advantage of their misery and commits other human rights violations.
How will they decide to apply tariffs to countries that sell oil to Cuba?
According to the executive order, the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnickwill determine whether a country sells or supplies oil to Cuba.
Afterwards, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubiowill decide whether and to what extent an additional tax should be imposed on the products of that nation.
