Protesters in various cities in the United States they called for a general strike against immigration raids promoted by the government of President Donald Trump.
Under the motto of “don’t work, don’t go to school, don’t buy,” the protest seeks to denounce what they consider a tightening of the actions ofl Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol in different communities.
The mobilization gained strength after the murder of Alex Pretti, a nurse who was shot while recording an immigration operation in Minneapolisas well as for the case of Renee Good, shot dead on January 7 by an ICE agent. These deaths reignited debate over federal tactics.
On social media, protest organizers stated: “The people of the Twin Cities (referring to Minneapolis) have shown the way for the entire country… we need to CLOSE IT.”
In several states, such as Arizona and Colorado, Some schools canceled classes preventively due to possible mass absences.
In Minneapolis, hundreds of people gathered at the federal building “Bishop Henry Whipple”where they marched towards a restricted area and shouted slogans against the agents. Part of the group dispersed after local police threatened arrest for blocking a road.
The protests also included the participation of students and small businesses. In Michigan, young people left classes to demonstrate, while restaurants in New York announced donations to immigrant support organizations.
In Maine, citizens gathered in front of a church with signs like “No ICE for ME”. The administrator of Grace Valenzuela Public Schools warned that the raids generate “daily trauma” in schools, and the mayor Mark Dion He stressed: “Dissidence is democratic… it is the cornerstone of our democracy”
