Night of terror on the tracks: Two trains derail in Spain and leave at least 21 dead

A serious train accident shook the province of Córdoba this Saturday afternoon. After a long-distance train from the Iryo company, which covered the Málaga-Madrid route (Puerta de Atocha), derailed in the municipality of Adamuz, causing at least two carriages to overturn and invading the adjacent track.

Minutes later, an Alvia high-speed train, which was traveling in the Madrid-Huelva direction, was forced to make an emergency braking, also derailing and leaving the track after the indirect impact.

VICTIMS AND INJURED

According to preliminary information confirmed by the Civil Guard, the toll is at least 21 people dead and more than a hundred injured, of which 25 are reported to be in serious condition. Two of the fatalities were traveling on the Iryo train and at least three on the Alvia.

The Iryo train was carrying 317 passengers at the time of the accident. As of press time, authorities have not specified the total number of people trapped in the overturned cars.

TESTIMONIALS FROM THE INSIDE

Affected passengers began to tell what happened through social networks. In several videos released, the lack of electricity, broken windows and smoke inside the cars can be seen.

“It felt like an earthquake,” said RTVE journalist Salvador Jiménez, who was traveling on one of the trains. Other users noted that urgent medical attention was requested while some passengers were evacuated through the windows onto the tracks.

EMERGENCY MOBILIZATION

The accident was initially confirmed by Adif, which reported the immediate deployment of emergency services, Civil Guard, firefighters and health personnel. Mobile ICU units, critical care devices and logistical support were activated, in addition to Red Cross resources.

All hospitals in the province of Córdoba were put on alert. While Madrid and other communities offered health support to care for the injured.

OFFICIAL REACTIONS AND MEASURES

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, reported that he went to Adif’s H24 Network Management Center to follow up on the incident. For his part, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families.

Rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia was suspended, and trains en route were redirected to their stations of origin. Adif enabled the telephone number 900 101 020 to assist relatives of the affected people.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

The causes of the derailment have not yet been clarified. Railway and judicial authorities have begun the corresponding investigations to determine those responsible for the accident, considered one of the most serious railway accidents in recent years in Spain.
