Man who posed as an FBI agent to free Luigi Mangione arrested

A man was charged Thursday for allegedly posing as an FBI agent in a U.S. jail to attempt to free Luigi Mangionesuspected of murdering the CEO of one of the country’s largest health insurers.

Mark Anderson, 36, was arrested Wednesday after staff at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center ask for your credentials and he will only show his driving license. Next, make sure you’re armed, according to court documents.

Officers found a barbecue fork and a round steel blade — similar to a pizza cutter — inside Anderson’s backpack.

The criminal complaint says Anderson told corrections officials they had documents “signed by a judge” that authorized the freedom of a specific prisonerwho was not named in the lawsuit.

A judicial source confirmed that the prisoner was Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old man accused of assassinate the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, in December 2024.

Mangione sought revenge for the excesses of the sector. For some it has become the symbol of Americans’ outrage against the health insurance system.

He also faces state and federal charges. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases. His federal trial will begin in September.
