At least 25 people died when two buildings caught fire in the Indian megapolis of Calcutta, local authorities announced on Friday, while the search for around twenty missing people continues.
The accident devastated the buildings of a decorators agency and a fast food company on Monday, the West Bengal state government minister in charge of firefighters, Sujit Bose, told AFP.
“The fire broke out early in the morning and surprised those who were sleeping in the building, before quickly spreading to another building,” he explained.
The balance of the incident remains provisional, Bose continued, since on Friday the families of 27 people still had no news of their loved ones.
The director of local emergency services, Ranvir Kumar, said the destroyed buildings were not equipped with all the safety devices required by law.
Fires are frequent in Calcutta, Indiadue to the poor state of the infrastructure and safety and evacuation standards that are not always applied.
