“This is a catastrophic situation. This is how David Neves, president of the Portuguesa Federation of Associações de Swine Cultivators (FPAS), DN, described this sixth day, January 30, in Leiria, a regional dinner and we were delighted after Kristin went through depression.
The manager drew attention to the destruction, which in many cases is invisible to those who are not aware of the terrain: “Ninguém tem noção do que es que tasiri insta zona”.
The situation is critical when examining specific situations. Without electricity, water or access to electricity, producers fear they won’t be able to keep the animals alive. I am “with our hearts broken, completely broken. And that is very serious,” he said.
According to the president of FPAS, regional businesses were found to be “completely devastated”, especially in the above-ground areas, where pig farming infrastructure prevailed, and the consequences of the storm were “absolutely catastrophic”.
The lack of basic services forces manufacturers to take extreme measures. “Now we will test the water from the chuva, direct the water that emerges from the chuva into the explorations to feed the animals, because we are in a very, very complicated situation”, described DN.
The great suffering, he underlines, is or bem-estar animal: “How do we feed animals? It is true that animals die in the same way.”
Due to the isolation of many surveys, we need to learn about our communication, the federation needs to contact us urgently. “We created a special line, an SOS line, to communicate with people we know, to tell us what it’s like,” explains David Neves, referring to what we call hundreds of surveys located between “the Carnaval area, Sertã and the top of Coimbra”.
For the manager, this crisis is averted and falls on individual farmers who solve a strategic issue for the country. “We are fighting for food security, we are fighting for a region that produces more than 50% of national production. And that’s why it’s important to look at it, it’s important to create the conditions for these people to respond.”
Pressure from the government: “Let’s not forget”
David Neves welcomes the presence of the President of the Republic and the Minister of Internal Administration in the government to carry out a quick intervention by the executive, also with the aim of securing a meeting agenda with the Minister of Agriculture on February 3. The aim is to ensure that this sector is not unsuitable for the reconstruction process.
“From our side, there is a certainty that the minister can be sure of: we cannot afford to look for solutions for these people,” he guaranteed.
The Federation expects to have a complete damage diagnosis in the sector in the next second half to meet the specific requirements that will arise for protection.
