The government has concluded the process of declaring the Zona Special de Conservação (ZEC) of the Natural Park Douro International (PNDI), which includes four regional governments and aims to protect habitats and species, according to a decree published this fourth day (28) in the Diário da República.

At 86,834.82 hectares, the PNDI covers an area adjacent to the Douro River, where the vegetation is dominated by blueberry (Quercus rotundifolia, locally grown Carrasco), leading to the presence of juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), alba (Q. suber) and manchas de carvalho-pyrenalica forests..
The Douro International Area is a fundamental area for the protection of birds, one of the most important areas in the national and Iberian context.

This ZEC is part of a group of 62 areas of Portugal classified as Sites of Public Interest (SCI) that are included in the Natura 2000 framework, and this ZEC designation process was necessary to carry out the transposition from the Habitats Directive from the União Europeia to the national legal system.
The Habitats Directive sees “ensuring the protection of habitat types and species of flora and fauna”, referring to the fact that, for this purpose, Member States must proceed to “classify as ZEC Community import sites (SICs) designated by the European Commission through a regulatory act which continues to define and classify areas of significant occurrence of identified habitat types and species”.
