Increase in green sales Pode Criar 49 Mil Empregos e Impulsionar PIB in Portugal

A 25% increase in sales in the key “green” manufacturing sector could generate $49 million and €9.6 million in additional PIB, according to a study by Nova SBE.

Nova SBE, which originates from Rega Energy, defends that “environmental certification represents a conversation mechanism that allows you to turn carbon dioxide customers into a competitive metering advantage.”

According to it, “there is a real and demonstrated willingness to pay” because “certified products receive price premiums of between 5% and 17%, as highlighted in many tests”.

Assim, “the macroeconomic impact of green production in those sectors that are part of CELE [Comércio Europeu de Licença de Emissão] is substantial”, if we consider that “a 25% increase in the sales of the analyzed sectors is more than 9,611 million euros of additional PIB (0.8% of PIB) and seeks 49,000 companies (1% of companies)”.

Having said that, looking at these sectors, including non-metallic mineral products, chemical products and synthetic fibers and the base metal industry, I conclude that fiscal income at the same time (25% increase in sales) could rise to 647 million euros.

According to the document, Portugal “has structural advantages” in this context, such as “a competitive renovation of the energy matrix, a qualified work model, a system of original guarantee and the Portugal brand” that “allow the country to capture the value of this transition”.

“Environmental certification represents a mechanism that transforms carbon savings into a competitive advantage with partial value creation,” which has yet to be explored, leading to “economic growth and fiscal revenue for the state,” as well as price and industry differences and informational views among consumers.

I recommend that the Portuguese industry take an “active paper to create a national product – “Made in Portugal, Made Sustainable” to access “various retail spaces where consumers can buy and pay for sustainable products”.
