Winter storm weather forecast: East Coast could see more snow, sleet and rain – here’s what to expect this weekend

Winter storm weather forecast: Just days after a severe winter storm swept through much of the country, parts of the East Coast could face more wintry weather this weekend, according to a report.

Winter storm forecast for January 31st and February 1st

Weather models show the potential for a new storm system to develop over the weekend of Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA Today reports.

While details remain uncertain, the system could bring snow, sleet or rain to areas already dealing with snow, ice and extreme cold.

A low pressure system could intensify winter impacts along the East Coast

With freezing temperatures expected to be firmly in place, Santorelli pointed out that a developing low-pressure system along the coast could add to the wintry weather in parts of the East hit by the storm that cleared on Jan. 26, according to a USA Today report.

The previous winter storm dumped over 20 inches of snow and ice

The earlier storm dumped more than 8 inches of snow and sleet along the coast and caused more than a million power outages. A rush of arctic air behind it pushed temperatures down sharply across a wide swath of the country, from Texas to Maine and as far south as Central Florida. Subzero temperatures were expected in most of the U.S. on the morning of January 27.

Forecasters warn of high uncertainty in the storm’s track and strength

Forecasters caution that it is still too early to know exactly how the next system will behave.

Santorelli said, “Right now, it’s impossible to determine where the storm will appear, where the precipitation could fall and what the precipitation could be,” adding, “There’s a lot of uncertainty about where it’s tracking and how much precipitation may fall in parts of the East,” USA Today quoted.

The Gulf Coast and East Coast could see impacts as early as Friday

Early model guidance suggests parts of the Gulf Coast and East Coast could begin seeing impacts as early as Friday, Jan. 30, according to AccuWeather. Paul Pasterok, AccuWeather’s long-range forecast expert, explained that “how quickly the storm strengthens will be a determining factor in the final storm track this weekend and whether or not it moves up the East Coast,” as quoted by USA Today.

Rain likely in the south, a wintry mix possible in the southeastern states

AccuWeather predicts rain will be most likely south of Interstate 10 from Louisiana to Florida, while areas further north across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia could see a mix of snow. As the system moves east through Saturday, there could be rain in Florida and wintry weather is possible in the Carolinas.
