The Minister of Defense is in Istanbul to support the program of new ships recovered from the Marine, to strengthen industrial cooperation and to promote the economic return on military investment for Portugal.
In Turkey this third day (January 27) Nuno Melo came to visit as part of a wider cycle of strengthening military capacities, modernizing the Marine and valorizing the national industry, stressing that defense investment must bring effective results, there is a strict operational plan.
“We are investing a lot in national defense, but we are not limited to the acquisition of capacities. We will seek the return that is necessary for the Portuguese economy and the development of our businesses in the production or maintenance cycle,” the minister said.
One of the focal points of the move is to accompany the program of new ships converted from the Marinha Portuguesa under construction in Turkey. Portugal awarded a military contract to a country outside the European Union for the first time, a decision Nuno Melo justified Ancara’s strategic weight in NATO. “It is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO and is one of two important countries that cannot be considered as a deterrent and defense,” declare.
The first vessel, or NRP Luís de Camões, is to be built at our ADA stations in Tuzla and will allow us to restore the lost capacity as the Abbot of NRP Bérrio in 2020. “Give the Marinha a capacity that is not coastal. It is a capacity that is projected in relation to what is the basic component of the reinforcement of the ship’s crew,” the minister underlined, classifying the new unit as part of the Marinha of the next generation as part of a more extensive renovation effort, including new ocean-going frigates and vessels built in Viana do Castelo.
