Shooting in Arizona: An unidentified person was left fighting for his life Tuesday after being shot during an encounter with the U.S. Border Patrol in southern Arizona, according to a report.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road in southern Pima County, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, NBC News reported. The Santa Rita Fire District said the person was found in critical condition and was transported from the scene for emergency treatment.

Firefighters from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response provided care before transferring the patient to a medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center. No further details about the person’s condition were immediately available.

The fire department said, “Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center,” adding, “The incident remains under active law enforcement investigation,” as quoted by NBC News.

The shooting comes as federal immigration authorities face increasing public scrutiny. It comes just days after Border Patrol fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good.

Meanwhile, federal immigration officials have shot and killed 12 people since September as the Department of Homeland Security expanded deportation operations across the country.
