It’s hard to say who had more fun during the 2025 high school football season at Los Alamitos High School — the players or coach Ray Fenton.
As one player put it, it was a “magical season” and showed that you don’t have to rely on transfers to win a Division 2 Southern Section championship.
Fenton has coached multiple talented teams, but is loaded with transfers. It was the year he stayed with the neighborhood kids who were best friends and played for each other and how they enjoyed the season.
Los Alamitos reeled off eight straight wins to open the season, then went 12-3 to win the Division 2 Southern Section title over league rival San Clemente. Every game was fun, win or lose. The players gave everything in every game. In every game, Fenton knew he could count on his players to stay focused and leave everything they had on the field.
He was voted The Times Coach of the Year for helping elevate a team that few thought was capable of winning the Southern Section Championship.
On the field in San Clemente after winning the Division 2 title, you could see how much this team and players valued him. One by one they came in to receive hugs from their bald coach, who looks fit enough to run a marathon.
It was a real joy and emotion, like reaching the top of a mountain.
