FCS Buck Buchanan Award: What is it and who is it named after?
In 1995, the Buck Buchanan Award was established to honor the most outstanding defensive player in the NFL.
A national panel of more than 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries selects the award winner based on the players’ performance during the season. Voting is conducted prior to the start of the FCS playoffs.
The Buck Buchanan Award is one of five national awards announced by STATS FCS.

Defensive Player of the Year Junius “Buck” Buchanan was an AFL and NFL legend with the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, winning eight straight AFL All-Stars and NFL Pro Bowls, two AFL championships and a Super Bowl IV ring. The first selection in 1963 began the journey to FCS program Grambling State from 1959-1962.
Buchanan, an All-American defensive tackle, is 6’7” and weighs 280 pounds. After enrolling at Grambling State on an “if” scholarship, Buchanan became one of the best players in Grambling State history. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio and the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
FCS Buck Buchanan Award: When will the winner be announced?
The Buck Buchanan Award winner is announced each year at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation the night before. FCS Championship Game. The 2025 recipient was announced in a broadcast on Saturday, January 3.
All six STATS FCS national honors are celebrated at the banquet, but the Jerry Rice, Eddie Robinson, HBCU Player of the Year and Doris Robinson winners were all announced early. During the ceremony, the winners of the Payton and Buchanan Awards were announced for the first time.

The initial 35-man Buck Buchanan Award roster was released during the STATS FCS preseason. The list is updated periodically throughout the regular season, and finalists are invited to attend a reception.
FCS Buck Buchanan Award: Complete History of Past Recipients
Mercer defensive end Andrew Zock won the Buck Buchanan Award as the 2025 FCS Football Defensive Player of the Year, edging out top three finishers James Conway (Fordham) and Joshua Stoneking (Furman). Zock is the first Mercer player to win the award in its 29-year history. In 12 regular season games, the Bears defense has 46 tackles (24 solo), 20.0 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 23 hurries.
Linebackers and defensive linemen have each been top 15 winners since the award was first received in 1995. Defensive tackle and cornerback were also honored. Cal Poly and Montana lead all schools with three winners.
Only one player has hoisted the hardware in consecutive years: Appalachian quarterback Dexter Coakley won in 1995 and ’96, the first two seasons in the award’s history.
