The Bowerman is awarded annually to the top male and female athlete in NCAA track and field. The 2025 men’s award went to Arkansas’ Jordan Anthony and the 2025 women’s award went to Alabama’s Doris Lemgole.
Here’s everything you need to know about the USTFCCCA’s annual awards.
What is The Bowerman and who is it named after?
The Bowerman debuted in 2009 as an award given to the top male and female NCAA track and field athletes.
Athlete of the Year Bill Bowerman is a track and field legend who coached at Oregon State from 1949-72. Bowerman’s Ducks won four state championships and two runner-up finishes. Bowerman has coached 24 NCAA championships, 33 Olympians and 64 All-Americans. Bowerman also coached the 1972 Olympic team.
Off the track, Bowerman was president of the USTFCCCA’s predecessor, the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and later founded Nike. Bowerman was also one of the key leaders in the founding of the USA Track and Field Association. For his contributions to the sport, Bowerman was elected to the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame for the first time in 1995.

How does Bowerman voting work?
A panel of national and regional media personnel, athletics statisticians, NCAA college administrators, past winners and presidents of affiliated organizations selects the award winner based on the players’ performance during the season. Plus, USTFCCCA members and fans get one vote in The Bowerman poll.
On the ballot, first choice votes are worth three points each, and second and third choice votes are worth two and one point each.
Voters consider athletes’ performances during the NCAA indoor track and field and outdoor track and field seasons. The Bowerman’s performance window is from Dec. 1 until the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Matches must be from the year the prize is awarded to qualify. However, an athlete does not need to compete in both the outdoor and indoor seasons to receive the award. Interstate matches do not count.
