Gavin McKenna makes his NCAA debut as Penn State sweeps ASU

No. 14 Arizona State men’s hockey hosts No. 5 Penn State on Oct. 3-4 at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona. Both games were broadcast nationally on the NHL Network and streamed live on the NHL Youtube channel and NCHC.tv.

2026 NHL Draft No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna made his college hockey debut on the opening weekend of the 2025-26 DI men’s hockey season.

Matt Dimarsico’s third-period hat trick led Penn State to victory in Friday night’s opener. The Nittany Lions trailed 3-2 before scoring four points in a third-quarter comeback. Charlie Serrato broke a program record with five points (2G, 3A) in a game, while McKenna had two assists in her NCAA debut.

McKenna scored her first NCAA goal Saturday, Oct. 4, to give Penn State a 3-2 lead late in the third quarter. The Nittany Lions added an empty-net goal for a 4-2 win and 15th at No. 14 Arizona State.

The Sun Devils and Nittany Lions are both ranked No. 5 PSU and No. 14 ASU in the USCHO preseason poll, with Penn State receiving three first-place votes.

Last season, Arizona State went 21-14-2, losing to Denver in the semifinals of the NCHC Tournament, the Sun Devils’ first season in the conference. Penn State went 22-14-4 while surprising the Frozen Four Region 4 seed. The Nittany Lions defeated Maine (5-1) and UConn (3-2 in OT) to advance to the program’s first Frozen Four.

Both programs enter the new season with Frozen Four hopes.

Retired Arizona State goaltender Joey Dacord’s #35 before Friday’s game. Dacord played from 2016-2019, going 21-13-1 with a .926 save and 2.35 GAA in his final season, leading the Sun Devils to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. He was drafted 199th overall by the Ottawa Senators and currently plays for the Seattle Kraken. Last season, he went 27-23-5 with a 2.73 GAA for the Kraken.
