Premier Lacrosse League forward Chris Gray has ended his career as DI men’s lacrosse’s all-time scoring leader by announcing his retirement from professional lacrosse after just three years.
Here are his college career stats, highlights and accolades:
Gray began a distinguished college career at Boston University in 2018, scoring 71 points (31 goals, 40 assists) as a freshman. He was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and was one of three freshmen named Inside Lacrosse All-Americans in 2018, and also set the Terriers’ single-season records for assists and points.

He broke the scoring mark in his first season and led all DI lacrosse with 111 points in 2019 with Boston. He set the Patriot League single-season scoring record and finished second in the nation in assists (62).

After becoming one of the game’s top offensive threats, the 5-foot-7 forward took his talents to five-time state champion North Carolina in 2020. Even though his Covid-plagued season was cut short after seven games with the Tar Heels, Gray had a monster season, putting up nearly 48 points per game.
He picked up where he left off in 2021 at Chapel Hill, scoring 91 points in his senior season, breaking the UNC single-season scoring record set by Bruce Ledwitt in 1973 (81). Gray led the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament semifinals, where they lost 12-11 to the eventual national champion Virginia Cavaliers.
He returned for his senior year in 2022 and led the ACC in scoring with 80 points. The Tar Heels missed the postseason in 2022, but in Gray’s final collegiate game against Duke, he scored six points and tied Lyle Thompson’s DI men’s lacrosse career record. Gray scored 400 to Thompson’s 401 to become one of the best players in the game.
In two full seasons at Chapel Hill, Gray is second all-time in points (219), goals (124) and fourth in goals (95) at UNC.
He was drafted by UNC second overall to the New York Atlas, and he officially retired from lacrosse at age 25. While there is no specific reason for his retirement, Gray will certainly be remembered in the lacrosse community for years to come.
