If you asked Los Alamitos basketball coach Nate Berger to be honest about his early expectations for a team that returns zero starters, he would say a 1-9 start wouldn’t be surprising.
But the Griffins, loaded with backups from last season and members of a good junior varsity team, head into early Sunset League action Monday against 16-1 Corona del Mar.
Tyler Lopez is in the lead. The senior committed to Jessup University in Northern California is averaging 17 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Isaiah Williamson, the younger brother of former Eastvale Roosevelt standout Issac Williamson, has been a big contributor.
Berger was pleased with the growing experience and confidence of his players after some struggles early in the season.
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how my team has responded and some of these young players have shone,” he said.
