Actor Eric Dane is now under round-the-clock medical supervision following the progression of his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
His ex-wife Rebecca Gayheart spoke about the current state of the “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” star in an essay dated May 29. The Cutwhere she revealed that “Eric now has nurses 24/7.”
Gayheart went on to detail her care plan: “The week is divided into 21 shifts. There are times when the shifts aren’t paid, so I cover them. There was a 12-hour shift recently that I couldn’t cover. I could only do four hours because of all the things the kids do. So I had to call two of Eric’s friends, one of them who could never take care of him like that. do it,” she wrote, revealing that Dane’s friends they did a “wonderful” job taking care of him.
Dane, 53, publicly revealed his diagnosis in April Peoplesaid, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we move through this next chapter.”
ALS is a rare and fatal disease that affects the nervous system Mayo Clinic. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spine that control muscle movement, causing patients to slowly lose the ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe on their own.

Gayheart served as Dane’s primary caregiver throughout his battle with ALS, though they separated in 2017 after 15 years of marriage. The couple never divorced and have two daughters together.
“It’s a very complicated relationship that’s confusing to people. Our love may not be romantic, but it’s family love,” Gayheart wrote in her essay for The Cut, revealing that they haven’t lived in the same house in eight years and are both dating other people.
“Eric knows that I will always want the best for him,” Gayheart continued, adding, “And I know he would do the same for me.”
She explained that one of the hardest parts of her estranged husband’s diagnosis is the lack of privacy from the paparazzi. “One time we went out for sushi and it was the first time I had to unload the wheelchair and open it and get Eric in by myself. And oh my god, I was sweating bullets and people were looking and taking pictures and I was so upset because I was really struggling,” she said.
However, Gayheart revealed that Dane’s illness made her empathetic. “Eric’s diagnosis has changed my approach to everything. Even with strangers, sometimes I’ll stand in line to get a coffee and I’ll just look at them and go, I wonder what they’re going through. Because I know everyone’s going through something,” she said.
Despite Dane’s round-the-clock care, she has no plans to quit acting just yet. He spoke at a panel hosted by the organization I am ALS on December 2, where he explained how he plans to keep performing in Hollywood. USA today.
“I’m quite limited in what I can do physically as an actor, but I still have my brain and I still have my speech, so I’m willing to do anything. I’ll take any role. From now on, it’s going to have to be ALS-focused. It’s going to be very difficult for me to play any other role,” he said.
“I’m fine with that,” he added. “I’m grateful to still be able to work in any capacity.
