The former Toledo quarterback, an all-conference selection, will attend Syracuse football

Syracuse, NY – Former Toledo linebacker Chris D’Appolonia will visit Syracuse football Monday, Syracuse.com told | Post-Standard.

D’Appolonia was an All-MAC Third Team selection last season while playing for the Rockets and new SU defensive coordinator Vince Kehres.

D’Appolonia has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He said his visit to Syracuse was to last one day.

He declined to say which other schools he plans to visit, preferring to keep that information private.

D’Appolonia finished last season with 68 tackles and played 638 defensive snaps, fifth most on the Toledo defense.

He thrived in pass coverage, ranking as the fourth-best linebacker in the Mid-American Conference, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF noted that D’Appolonia missed just two of 25 pass attempts and gave up 138 yards on 16 catches on 28 carries when he was the target defender.

This is an area where Syracuse’s defenders were particularly weak last season. Returning starter Gary Bryant III received one of the lowest levels of coverage among ACC linebackers, while Antoine Deslauriers was pedestrian.

By PFF’s calculations, Bryant has given up 19 catches and 222 yards in 23 games where he has been the target quarterback. He missed three pass interceptions.

PFF rated Anwar Sparrow as SU’s best pass coverage back last season. Sparrow is ineligible.

When Syracuse hired Kehres from Toledo to coach the defense, he was expected to bring in some members of his defense, which ranked fourth in the nation in scoring last season.

D’Appolonia was rated as a two-star recruit coming out of high school where he played with Senaca Valley High School in Harmony, Pennsylvania.

A pair of Toledo defensive players who earned all-conference honors committed to other programs on Sunday, according to reports.

Defensive end Malachi Davis, All-MAC First Team selection committed to Rutgers. Defensive lineman Esean Carter, a third-team All-MAC selection, committed to UConn.

According to 247Sports reporter Mike McAllister, Carter was scheduled to visit Syracuse on Monday.
