Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott had some positive news regarding kicker Matt Prater during his media availability on Monday.
Prater, 41, returned from a right quad injury in the Bills’ 35-8 win over the New York Jets after missing the team’s previous two games. At some point in the first half, Prater re-aggravated his right quad injury. McDermott was told at halftime that Prater could no longer kick. That led to punter Mitch Wishnowsky handling the kickoffs and the team going for two after every touchdown in the second half.
The loss to Prater in the regular season finale led many to believe that Buffalo would need a new football player for the playoffs. That may still be true, but McDermott told the media that Prater is currently day-to-day and could potentially kick out Sunday in the team’s Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
McDermott added that the Bills will host several kickers this week. That will give the Bills a backup plan if Prater can’t kick against the Jaguars.
It is unknown at this time who the Bills will bring in for tryouts, but the team hosted Younghoe Koo, Gavin Stewart and Maddux Trajill on December 23rd. One or all three could attend Tuesday’s tryouts, along with other options.
Prater converted on 18 of 20 field goals (90%) in the regular season. The veteran kicker also made 46 of 49 extra points in 2025 (93.9%).
