An Onondaga County legislator has launched a bid to unseat state Sen. Rachel May: An Onondaga County lawmaker who served 20 years as a sheriff’s deputy plans to launch a campaign today to unseat Sen. Rachel May, D-Syracuse, in the 2026 election. Rich McCarron, 54, of Onondaga Hill, said he will campaign for the 48th Senate District seat rather than seek re-election to a third term in the Onondaga County Legislature. He will become the second Republican county lawmaker to announce a bid for statewide office since Democrats won a majority in the Onondaga County Legislature for the first time in nearly 50 years.

What’s trendy

No Honeymoon for Onondaga County Legislators: If anyone was expecting a political honeymoon as Democrats assert their newfound control of the Onondaga County Legislature, they were likely disappointed Friday. A look back at Syracuse’s snowiest day, when 34 inches of snow paralyzed CNY in 1946: Perhaps the only thing more surprising than last Tuesday’s 24.2 inches piled up at Syracuse Hancock International Airport was the revelation of what was Syracuse’s snowiest day ever. Surely it was during one of the city’s spectacular blizzards, like 1966 or 1993? No. Instead, it was a Friday almost 80 years ago, on February 15, 1946, when 34 inches fell.

Looking ahead

It could take at least another 2 weeks for water to flow in the CNY burst pipe: Water may not flow through a huge underground water main in Cicero that burst in December until the middle of this month, officials said Friday. After work crews finish laying a new 134-foot section of pipe, the Onondaga County Water Authority. After that, the agency must pressurize the pipeline and test the water to Health Department specifications. This means residents and businesses may need to continue to take protective measures until the third week of this month.
