14-0 third-quarter run lifts Syracuse girls to victory at Wake Forest


The Syracuse women’s basketball team broke open a tight game in the third quarter to defeat Wake Forest 73-58 on Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Sophie Burrows scored 8 points and Laila Phelia scored 7 points in the third quarter for SU. The Orange outscored the Deacons 23-8 in the quarter — including a 14-0 run — and turned a 1-point halftime lead into a 55-39 lead in the final 10 minutes.

Freshman Uche Izoje led Syracuse with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the win, which lifted the Orange to 13-2 on the season, 3-1 in the ACC. Wake Forest fell to 12-4, 2-2 in the conference.

Phelia finished with 17 points, while Burrows added 14 and Shy Hawkins 12 for SU. Phelia also had five steals. Domonique Darius had nine assists for the Orange.

Grace Oliver led Wake Forest with 16 points.

The Orange host Virginia Tech on Thursday at 6pm at the JMA Wireless Dome.
