Syracuse, NY – LSU transfer running back Ju’Juan Johnson will visit Syracuse this weekend, Syracuse.com said.
Johnson said he will be in Syracuse Saturday night into Sunday. His visit was first reported by Jamarcus Fitzpatrick, a television reporter from the runner’s hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana.
Johnson was ranked as the No. 356 recruit in the Class of 2024 when he committed to LSU. He was a quarterback in high school, but moved to defensive end after joining LSU.
The school moved to running back his freshman year after the position was affected by injuries, earning him a reputation as a team player. He was also LSU’s emergency quarterback.
Johnson, listed at 6-foot-2 and 201 pounds, has two years of eligibility remaining.
Syracuse is looking for a starter at running back after the transfer of Yasin Willis.
Johnson is ranked recruitment website On3.com as runner #25 and player #277 available on the transfer portal. The website ranks Willis at #27 and #289.
Johnson was third on LSU’s depth chart last year, carrying the ball 41 times for 155 yards and two scores.
The Tigers tried to use his athleticism in a variety of ways, lining him up at times as a wide receiver and quarterback. Syracuse struggled with a one-dimensional game at running back last year, as both Willis and backup running back Will Nixon had obvious strengths and weaknesses.
According to Pro Football Focus, Johnson struggled the most when used in pass protection last season.
A graduate of Lafayette Christian High School in Louisiana, he is considered the most productive high school quarterback in Louisiana history with a state-record 14,451 total yards and 171 total touchdowns.
A transfer portal opened on Friday, allowing schools to communicate directly with athletes for the first time. The portal will remain open for players until January 16.
